Think-Tac-Toe

Think-Tac-Toe activities provide the students in your classroom with choices on how best to demonstrate the information they have learned. They are, in essence, “choice boards.” The teacher creates a variety of opportunities for the students to express learning. The students choose activities with which they are most comfortable or those with which they believe they can be most successful. While Think-Tac-Toe boards may take additional preparation time by the teacher, the benefits to the students are worthy. Students feel empowered when they have input into their educational endeavors and Think-Tac-Toe boards provide that impetus.

Take a look at the Think-Tac-Toe example PDF [PDF: 1 page / 44k] provided for your grade level. Notice how the students are given a variety of options to demonstrate understanding. Each Think-Tac-Toe level represents a task of increasing skill difficulty. Also, activities geared toward learning styles and multiple intelligences are included among the levels. For example, you may choose to have a mixture of activities that relate to each of the multiple intelligences, tap into different learning styles, or are differentiated by readiness.

A helpful hint: Make sure students reference the activity box number with each of their completed assignments. That way, you don’t have to “guess” which student product corresponds to which activity choice.

Now you try it. Using the template PDF [PDF: 1 page / 36k] provided, create your own Think-Tac-Toe board for a subject or unit of study.
